WWII Postcards Archive

Postcards have been around since the late 1800s. They were an easy and quick way to communicate. The 1930’s saw improvements in paper quality, color, and sharper images. During the war years, private companies and the US government printed millions of postcards with patriotic art to build support for the war effort.
In 1943, Camp Edwards issued and used linen-style and photochromatic postcards so that troops could write home. These military mail cards featured “Free” in place of a stamp, allowing soldiers to send mail without postage. Here are several samples from our postcard collection.
